Lake Balboa News

Lake Balboa is bordered by the following Los Angeles communities: Encino to the south, Van Nuys to the east, Reseda to the west, and Northridge and North Hills to the north. Its population was 24,238 in 2000, according to the U.S. Census, and 26,195 in 2008, based on L.A. Department of City Planning estimates. It covers an area in 3.13 square miles, and has 7,754 people per square mile, about average for the City of Los Angeles and about average for the county.

In 2007, a large part of Van Nuys went through the community re-naming process and was re-named Lake Balboa. The Anthony C. Beilenson Park (formerly Balboa Park) is an 80 acre recreation facility in the Sepulveda Flood Basin located in Lake Balboa. The centerpiece of the park is the 27 acres Lake Balboa, filled with water from the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant.

The park has barbecue pits, a bicycle path, a cascade, a children's play area, a fly fishing area, a 1.3 mile jogging path, a lake for fishing (swimming is prohibited), a launch ramp, pedal boats, picnic pavilions and picnic tables,  private boating (only boats without motors are accepted, unless the boats are for electric trolling), and a remote control boating cove. Japanese cherry blossom trees are located in the park. There is also a universally accessible playground designed for handicapped and non-handicapped children at the Beilenson Park.

Woodley Park in Lake Balboa is unstaffed and unlocked. The park has the Apollo 3 Flight Field, an archery range, barbecue pits, an unlighted baseball diamond, a children's play area, cricket fields, picnic tables, toilets, and a wildlife reservation area. In addition two pocket parks are located in Lake Balboa. The 1.74 acres (0.70 ha) Jesse Owens Mini-Park is unstaffed and unlocked. The park has toilet facilities. Louise Park, an unstaffed, unlocked pocket park, has barbecue pits, a lighted baseball diamond, unlighted outdoor basketball courts, a children's play area, and picnic tables.

One of the most unique features of this area is the Japanese Garden designed by Dr. Koichi Kawana, a native of Hokkaido, Japan,. "Suiho En." the Ggarden of Water and Fragrance, is a 6.5 acre authentic Japanese garden

fashioned after “stroll gardens” build in the 18th and 19th centuries for Japanese Feudal lords. The Japanese Garden has received Progressive Architecture's Design Award; Victor M. Carter Diamond Award, the highest honor of the Japan America Society of Southern California; the Companionate of Merit in Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem in Edinburgh; and the Gold Medal from Academia Italia della Arti de del Lavoro. It incorporates three classical designs: a dry "karensansui," a wet garden with promenade "chisen," and an authentic tea ceremony garden with a tatami mat tea room.

Lake Balboa is served by the Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council. Other organizations in this neighborhood include the Friends of Lake Balboa.
